Benito Salas Neiva Airport Car Rental (NVA)

Benito Salas Airport (NVA) serves Neiva, the capital of Huila Department in southern Colombia, about 5 km from the city center. With 2 rental companies on site, it's a good starting point for exploring San Agustín (about 130 km south) and the Tatacoa Desert (about 40 km north). The airport is small and pickup is quick.

Neiva lies in the Magdalena River valley at about 442 meters elevation with a warm climate around 28-33°C. The Tatacoa Desert, one of Colombia's most fascinating geological formations, is reached in about 40 km north via Villa Vieja. San Agustín with its archaeological park (UNESCO) is about 130 km south, a drive of about 2.5 hours.

Rent an SUV if you plan to visit San Agustín - the road up into the Andes is winding and sometimes potholed. Visit the Tatacoa Desert early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat of 40°C+. Always fill up a full tank in Neiva - fuel can be hard to find along the road to San Agustín.

How long does it take to drive from NVA to the Tatacoa Desert? About 40 km and approximately 45-60 minutes north via Villa Vieja. The road is paved but narrow on the final stretch toward the desert.

Can I drive from Neiva to Bogotá with a rental car? Yes, about 300 km (about 5-6 hours) north via route 45 along the Magdalena valley. The road is well-traveled and relatively well signposted.

Which rental companies are at NVA? There are 2 rental companies at the airport. Book in advance as selection is limited and cars can sell out during high season around Semana Santa and New Year.
