Santiago's city center is approximately 15 km and 30–45 minutes from Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Pudahuel. Valle Nevado ski resort in the Andes is 60 km to the east and can be reached in 1.5 hours. Valparaíso and Viña del Mar on the coast are 120 km to the west, approximately 1.5 hours via Route 68.

Avoid driving through Santiago's city center during rush hours of 07:30–09:30 and 17:30–20:00 – traffic is intense. Check whether your car has restrictions on smog days (Restricción Vehicular) – some older vehicles are not allowed to drive in the city center. Rent a car in the city center if you're planning day trips, but use the metro to get around the city itself.

Is it worth renting a car in Santiago city center or is it better to pick up at the airport? For city visits, the metro and Uber are sufficient. Rent a car in the city center when you plan to leave the city – it's more convenient than arranging transport to the airport first.

How long does it take to drive from Santiago city center to Portillo ski resort? Portillo is approximately 145 km to the east via Route 60 toward Mendoza and takes about 2 hours.
