Car Rental at Whangārei Airport (WRE)

Whangarei Airport (WRE) is located 9 km southeast of the city center and offers domestic flights to Auckland with 5 rental agencies on-site. The airport is a convenient entry point to Northland for travelers wanting to avoid the long drive from Auckland. From here, it's easy to start a tour along the Bay of Islands or east toward the Tutukaka coast.

From the airport, it takes 15 minutes to drive into Whangarei center via Kamo Road. North toward Paihia and the Bay of Islands is 75 km and approximately one hour's drive via SH1. Rent a smaller car if you're only exploring Northland's paved roads - larger SUVs are unnecessary and more expensive.

Drive out to Whangarei Heads, 35 km southeast of the airport, for dramatic volcanic coastline and hiking trails. Book your car in advance during school holidays in January and July when demand increases significantly. Is it better to fly to Whangarei or drive from Auckland?

The flight takes 40 minutes versus 2-2.5 hours of driving. Flying works if you're in a hurry, but renting a car from Auckland offers more flexibility and is often cheaper overall. How far is it from Whangarei Airport to the Bay of Islands?

It's 75 km to Paihia via SH1 and takes approximately one hour. Kerikeri, an alternative base in the Bay of Islands, is 80 km away. Are there rental car offices directly at the terminal?

Yes, the rental agencies have offices at or near the terminal. Contact your chosen company in advance for exact pickup instructions, as the airport is small and the layout is straightforward.
