The town is located at the mouth of the Grey River, approximately 100 km north of Hokitika. From here it's just 10 km to Shantytown Heritage Park and about 45 minutes to the fantastic Punakaiki Pancake Rocks along SH6.

Arthur's Pass National Park can be reached in just over an hour east via SH73. Choose a car with good ground clearance if you plan to drive gravel roads toward the glaciers. Always fill up with a full tank in Greymouth – gas stations are sparse along the West Coast.

Drive south toward Franz Josef early in the morning for the best light and fewer tourists. How far is it from Greymouth to Franz Josef Glacier? It's approximately 175 km south along SH6 and takes about 2.5 hours.

The main road SH6 is paved and suitable for regular passenger cars, but side roads into nature sometimes require 4WD.
