Kahului center with shopping and groceries is just 3 km from the airport. Iao Valley State Monument, with the iconic Iao Needle, is reached in 20 minutes (15 km) heading west. Paia Town, the starting point for Hana Highway, is 10 km east and takes about 15 minutes via Hana Highway (HI-36).

Pick up your rental car early in the morning if you're planning the Hana Highway – the route is 85 km but takes 2.5–3 hours one way with all the curves and stops. Always fuel up in Kahului or Paia before the Hana trip, as gas stations along the way are few and expensive. Book a car with unlimited mileage – Maui's road network is small but you'll easily drive 150–200 km per day if you explore the entire island.

How long does it take to drive Hana Highway from Kahului? Hana Highway is about 85 km and takes at least 2.5–3 hours one way without extended stops. With stops at waterfalls and viewpoints, you should plan for a full day.

Can I drive around all of Maui in one day? Technically possible but not recommended. West Maui Loop via Kahekili Highway is partly unpaved and covers about 200 km.

Spread your exploration over at least 2–3 days. Are there car rental shuttles from the terminal to the rental stations? Yes, most major car rental companies have shuttle buses from the arrivals hall to their stations just outside the airport area.
