Inyokern Airport (IYK) is located in Indian Wells Valley, 230 km north of Los Angeles and 30 km west of Ridgecrest in the Mojave Desert. With only one rental company on-site, it's important to book your car well in advance, especially during the summer months. The airport is small but serves as a gateway to Mojave and Sierra Nevada.

Inyokern is near China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station, one of the largest military testing grounds in the US, covering vast areas of the surrounding region. Death Valley National Park is reached approximately 100 km north via Highway 178, a dramatic drive through Panamint Valley. Sierra Nevada and Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the US, lie just under 80 km to the northwest.

Book your rental car at least 2 weeks in advance - with only one rental company, vehicles sell out quickly during peak season. Fill up in Ridgecrest (30 km to the east), as gas stations along Highway 395 can be miles apart. Check road conditions to Death Valley during winter months - snow can close mountain passes.
