Yellowknife Airport Car Rental (YZF)

Yellowknife Airport (YZF) is the gateway to the Northwest Territories and offers car rentals from 2 companies - essential for exploring this vast northern region. The airport is just 5 km northwest of Yellowknife center, about 10 minutes' drive via Highway 4. From here, you can drive out on Ingraham Trail and experience Canada's subarctic wilderness up close.

Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories and world-famous for northern lights experiences during winter (November - March). Dettah Ice Road, a seasonal ice road across Great Slave Lake, is one of Canada's most spectacular driving experiences and starts near the city. Book a rental car well in advance - with only 2 companies and high seasonal traffic during aurora season, availability is extremely limited.

Drive out on Ingraham Trail (Highway 4) east to reach Prelude Lake and Cameron Falls, 30-50 km from the center. Always check road conditions - in winter, temperatures can drop to -40°C and dramatically affect driving conditions. Can I drive to other cities from Yellowknife with a rental car?

Yellowknife is not connected to the southern road network by highway - Highway 3 south is the only way out and leads to High Level in Alberta, about 1,000 km away. When is the best time to rent a car in Yellowknife for northern lights experiences? November through March is best for northern lights, but check winter tire requirements and make sure the rental car is equipped for arctic conditions.

How far is it from YZF to Yellowknife center? The airport is about 5 km from the center and takes approximately 10 minutes to drive via Highway 4 and 48th Street.
