1. The quick answer
Yes, you can rent a car without a credit card, using an ordinary bank debit card (Visa Debit or Mastercard Debit). Many major chains accept debit cards for both payment and deposit. Three caveats:
- You must choose the right company. Not all accept debit cards, and rules differ by country.
- The deposit is charged or held directly on your account, so you need funds for rental + deposit + margin.
- Prepaid cards do not count. Revolut, N26 and Wise are usually declined for the deposit, even though they are "cards".

2. Booking without a credit card, step by step
- Search your destination in the comparison as usual, with your dates.
- Open the rental conditions for each offer. Every offer has a terms box showing which cards are accepted at the counter and the deposit amount.
- Look for "debit cards accepted". Choose offers that explicitly allow debit cards for the deposit. If it says "credit card required", move on.
- Prefer major chains. International brands are generally more flexible than local budget companies.
- Book with the card in the main driver's name. The card shown at the counter must belong to the main driver, with virtually no exceptions.
