Arvidsjaur Airport (IATA: AJR) is located 8 km east of Arvidsjaur center and is serviced by regular flights from Stockholm Arlanda during the winter season. Five rental companies are on-site at the airport, making it easy to drive straight out into Lapland's expanses. Driving to Arjeplog takes 90 km (approx. 1 hour) and to Jokkmokk 130 km (approx. 1 hour 30 minutes).

The airport is an important base for car manufacturers testing their vehicles on ice during January - March, and the rental companies are experienced with customers with high demands for winter equipment. The surrounding area is dominated by boreal forest and frozen marshlands that create a unique Arctic environment. The Silver Road (E45) is reached in 10 minutes' drive and leads straight into the heart of Lapland.

Book a rental car with an engine heater and studded tires if you arrive during winter season - this is standard with most rental companies at AJR. Check flight times carefully; the regular flight from Arlanda takes approx. 1 hour 40 minutes but doesn't always operate daily. Bring warm clothes in your carry-on - if your luggage is delayed, the outside temperature can be below minus 20 degrees.
