Picking up a car on Carrer Blanc

Magaluf and its twin resort Palmanova sit at the western end of the Bay of Palma in the municipality of Calvià, around 15 km from Palma. The town is best known for its beach and the nightlife on Punta Ballena, and in July and August it is packed. The rental offices in our list are grouped on Carrer Blanc, in the area where Magaluf meets Palmanova, so you can walk over from most hotels without needing a transfer.

Getting out of the resort

  • The Ma-1 motorway runs just inland of Magaluf. East it takes you to Palma and the airport in well under half an hour outside rush hour.
  • West it continues past Santa Ponsa and Peguera towards Andratx and its port.
  • From Andratx the Ma-10 climbs into the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with viewpoints, Estellencs, Banyalbufar and Valldemossa along the way to Sóller.
  • Sóller is also reached through the road tunnel from Palma, and the vintage railway and tram make a fun detour.

Quiet coves and parking

Calvià's coast has small coves such as Portals Vells and the beaches near Cala Vinyes, where a car makes it easy to escape the crowds. Car parks at the most popular coves fill by late morning in summer. Off-season, from November to March, Magaluf is mostly a residential town, many bars close and some rental offices shorten their hours, so check the times before booking a winter stay.
