Car rental at Lagos train station

Lagos station is the western terminus of the Algarve railway line, so regional trains from Faro and the connecting services from Lisbon end here. For travellers heading on towards Sagres or the Costa Vicentina, where trains do not go and buses are infrequent, it is a logical point to switch to a car.

How pickup works

No rental company has a desk inside the station. The company listed here works on a delivery basis from the Estrada de São Roque: a representative meets you at the station at an agreed time with the car. Share your train time and keep your phone switched on, since trains on the Algarve line are slow and delays happen.

Getting around Lagos

The station lies beside the marina on the east side of the Bensafrim river, opposite the old town, which you reach on foot via the footbridge. The walled old centre has narrow one-way streets and little parking, so you may prefer to explore it before collecting the car. Ponta da Piedade, with its sea stacks and grottoes, is a short drive south of town and has a car park near the lighthouse.

Drives from Lagos

• Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente: the south-western tip of Europe's mainland, where the coast turns north and the wind picks up.
• Costa Vicentina: the west coast between Aljezur and the Alentejo is part of a natural park with surf beaches and cliff-top viewpoints, quite unlike the resorts further east.
• Back east: the A22 motorway runs from Lagos to the Spanish border near Vila Real de Santo António. Tolls on it were abolished from 1 January 2025, so it is free to use.

In summer, beach car parks around Lagos and on the west coast fill early, and many roads to the beaches end in dirt tracks, so drive slowly and do not leave valuables visible in the car.
