Rent a Car at Chandigarh Airport (IXC)

Chandigarh Airport (IXC) is located about 11 km south of Chandigarh city center and serves the planned city that is the joint capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana. One rental company is on site, and a car is the best way to explore the region, including Shimla in the foothills of the Himalayas. Chandigarh is also known for its modernist urban planning by Le Corbusier.

From the airport it's about 20 minutes to Chandigarh city center and Rock Garden, a unique sculpture park created from recycled materials. Shimla, Himachal's picturesque mountain town and former British summer resort, is about 115 km to the north and is reached in about 2.5 hours via NH5. Manali, one of India's most popular mountain destinations, is about 300 km away via the Kullu Valley.

Rent a sturdy car or SUV if you plan to drive toward Shimla or Manali - the mountain roads are narrow and require good ground clearance. Start early toward Shimla to avoid queues at the Shoghi tunnel, which forms during weekends. Check road status on the HRTC website during winter (December - February) as snow can close mountain passes.

How long does it take to drive from Chandigarh Airport to Shimla? It is about 115 km and takes approximately 2.5-3 hours via NH5, with narrower mountain roads in the final stretch into Shimla. Can I drive a rental car to Manali from Chandigarh?
